New York, 1974. Fifty-year-old Chris (Clive Owen), who has just been released for good behavior after a few years in prison after a gangland murder. Waiting for him, reluctantly, at the door of his younger brother Frank (Billy Crudup), a police officer from the future. Chris and Frank was always different, and their father, Leon (James Caan), which raised them alone, seems to favor Chris spite of all their problems. However, blood ties are those that bind and Frank, hoping that his brother has changed, ready to give him a chance - he divides his house, he would find a job and helping him again with his children and his ex-wife, Monica (Marion Cotillard).
